The Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR" has been providing public services in the field of laboratory diagnosis since its foundation in 1940. Since the founding till now spectrum of investigations, complexity and magnitude has increased very significant. As well substantial changes have occurred among customers. They only were animal keepers and veterinarians in the beginning, but also food production and processing companies, producers of water and beverage, product certification centres, hospitals, dispensaries, cosmetic producers and distributors, mobile operators and many other industries are using services of „BIOR” now.

- Investigations of animal feed

- Other laboratory services
According to the customers' requests public services in the field of laboratory diagnostics are supplemented with:
- collection and transportation of samples
- organizing of interlaboratory comparative testing
- sample preparation for equipment calibration
- preparation of microbiological media
- staff training, theoretical and practical advising
Laboratories of the Institute have a capacity to provide a wide spectrum testing. Although there are several laboratories in Latvia, which are technically able to provide investigations in certain areas, but there are no other laboratory with such a broad list of accredited methods even in the Baltic countries. Besides the Institute "BIOR" has not only the greatest experience in the industry in Latvia, but also Institute's laboratories (as National Reference Laboratories) are able to offer services using the most advanced and most relevant techniques.
There are some investigations which are not provided in the Institute in Riga. Institute has a list of foreign laboratory-partners, therefore specific investigations also could be made abroad.
Quality of provided public services also was appreciated by foreign customers. In 2005 the Institute launched into operation in foreign trade markets and during last 5 years foreign orders have increased more than 20 times. In addition to laboratory diagnosis, there is intensive collaboration implemented in other areas related with laboratory services. During the last 2 years 485 foreign experts were trained at the Institute and 3 foreign laboratories were prepared for international accreditation.
