Latvian fisheries research – history of institution development

The Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR" was established reorganizing the Food and Veterinary Service (FVS) and the Latvian Fish Resources Agency (LATFRA).

November 1st, 2004
The Latvian Fish Resources Agency (LATFRA) was established with Māris Vītiņš as director.

1991 – 2004
The Latvian Fisheries Research Institute (LATFRI).
Directors: Jevgeņijs Rimšs, D. Biol. (1991), Māris Vītiņš (since 1992).

1962 - 1991
Baltic Fisheries Research Institute (BaltNIIRH).
Director: Mihails Poļakovs.

1959 – 1962
Fisheries Research Institute (NIIRH).
Director: Elena Maļikova, D. Biol.

1945 – 1959
Latvian Department of the All-Union Research Institute of Marine Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO).
Directors: Austra Šurin (1945-1954), Eļena Maļikova, D. Biol. (1955-1959).

1929
The Fishery Laboratory at the Department of Fishery and Fish Culture of the Ministry of Agriculture was established.

1921
The Hydrobiological Laboratory  at the Department of Fishery and Fish Culture of the Ministry of Agriculture was established.
