The Laboratory of Food and Environmental Investigations (LFEI) is the largest laboratory of the Institute implementing a wide range of functions of whole Institute.

There are following areas in the field of the LFEI activities:

  • analyses of food, feed, water and other objects according to the requests of state institutions, individuals and companies;
  • reference laboratory functions in cooperation with the European Reference Laboratories coordinating regional departments of the Institute "BIOR" and other in food business involved laboratories;
  • research in the field of food and environmental science;
  • staff training about laboratory investigations, sampling, laboratory quality systems and food law issues;
  • microbiological culture media preparation for Institute and other laboratories in Latvia;
  • preparation for calibration milk samples for milk processing plant laboratories;
  • food and water sampling for laboratory investigations on the customer request.

There work more than 60 specialists of different areas (biology, chemistry and food technology) in the Food and Environmental Investigations Laboratory. The laboratory has the widest spectrum of activities in Latvia. There are more than 350 test methods accredited in the Latvian National Accreditation Bureau. In several areas (such as dioxins, residues of veterinary drugs, Sr90 in food) the LFEI is the only laboratory in Latvia capable to provide the investigations.

An important field of the LFEI activities is the cooperation with foreign clients. Laboratory fulfils the part of the official residue monitoring program of Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus and implements investigations by requests of foreign companies. Within the projects funded by the European Union and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, experts of the LFEI provide trainings in several countries (like Ukraine, Moldova, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, etc.) for local specialists and advice them on food safety and quality issues.

The LFEI is accredited in Latvia (LATAK) and Russia (ГОССТАНДАРТ РОССИИ un РОСПОТРЕБНАДЗОР) according to ISO / IEC 17025 standard. (Certifficate of Accreditation)
To confirm the reliability of results, the laboratory actively participates in inter-laboratory comparison programs.

To ensure requests of the Institute's clients, the LFEI collaborates with other accredited laboratories in the European Union providing a wider range of test investigations. LFEI cooperation partners are laboratories in England, the Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Norway, France and Hungary.
