Hatchery "Tome"
Hatchery "Tome" is located in the countryside of Kegums. "Tome" is one of the oldest fish farms in Latvia. It was founded in 1929, renovated and expanded in 1983. „Tome” is the largest hatchery of salmon smolts in Latvia and in all region of the Baltic Sea. The main task of the hatchery „Tome” is to compensate losses of Daugava salmon and sea trout resources.
Hatchery releases 550,000 salmon and sea trout smolts, 150,000 one-summer-old salmons and sea trout, 350 000 pike-perch and whitefish in inland waters of Latvia per year. In addition rainbow trout, sturgeon and carp juveniles are reared. Breeding herd of brown trout, whitefish, sturgeon (sterlete, the Siberian sturgeon, bester) are reared and supported for further reproduction of juveniles.
Since November 2004, hatchery „Tome" was one of seven state hatcheries – branches of the State Agency "Latvian Fish Resources Agency”.
Hatchery "Tome" was joined to hatchery "Kegums'' in June 2009. As a result of reorganization of the Latvian Fish Resources Agency and the National Diagnostic Centre, the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR” was founded in January 2010. Hatchery "Tome" with its branches: fish farm "Dole", fish farm "Pelci" and fish farm "Karli" with its branch "Brasla" became a united hatchery of the Institute “BIOR”.
Hatchery "Dole"
Hatchery "Dole" is located in Salaspils region on the island Dole. Hatchery began its action in 1987 as a compensatory fish farm at the Riga Hydroelectric Power Station. “Dole” is the only specialized vimba juvenile rearing hatchery in the Baltic Sea basin.
Hatchery releases at least 170 000 Baltic salmon smolts, 420 000 vimba and whitefish juveniles, and 5 million larvae of lamprey and pike in the basins of Daugava and Lielupe per year. In addition to rearing of vimba juvenile "Dole" rears also rainbow trout.
Hatchery "Karli" with its branch "Brasla"
Hatchery "Karli" is located in Drabesi, at Amata region. Hatchery was founded in 1932 and partially renovated in 1987. Hatchery works on saving of salmons’ population releasing one-year-old and two-year salmon smolts in the Gauja basin. Hatchery releases 200,000 salmon smolts and juveniles in the Gauja basin per year. The hatchery also rears larvae of sea trout.
Hatchery “Brasla” was joined to the hatchery "Karli" in February 2010.
Hatchery "Brasla" was founded in 1972. The hatchery specializes in rearing of sea trout smolts. The main task of the hatchery „Brasla” is restocking of sea trout resources in the Gauja basin. "Brasla" rears also larval of lamprey for restocking lamprey resources in the Gauja basin.
Hatchery "Pelci"
Hatchery "Pelci" is located in Pelci, at Kuldiga region. It was founded in 1940. The main task of the fish farm is restocking of salmon fish resources in the Venta basin. Hatchery “Pelci” releases 200,000 salmon and sea trout smolts and juveniles in the Venta basin per year. The hatchery rears also one-year-old salmon smolts. „Pelci” rears larvae of pike and lamprey. Hatchery rears also juveniles of rainbow trout and carps.
Several dozens of knowledgeable and experienced fish farming specialists work in the hatcheries. Specialists organize and manage the process of fish farming and are responsible for production in fish farming plants. Professional knowledge and years of experience of employees ensures a successful process of fish farming.
The annual volume of restocking of juvenile fish and larvae population for natural public water bodies is at least 10500000 pcs.
