International Workshop of Animal Welfare

 In the end of April, 2012 in Riga in the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR” was held international workshop of animal welfare. There participiated 120 specialists from 13 different countries.

Annual meeting of Working Group on Zooplankton Ecology

 From 24th – 30th March 2012 researcher of Fish Resources Department of the Institute „BIOR” Gunta Rubene visited annual meeting of Working Group on Zooplankton Ecology in Malaga (Spain), where she presented report  „Zooplankton status in 2011, long-term dynamics and relationship between ecosystem components in the Gulf of Riga: LIMOD project results”.

Baltic International Trawl Survey (BITS) carried out in March

From 4th to 14th March 2012 specialists of Fish Resources Research Department of the Institute “BIOR” in accordance with the Latvian National Fisheries Data Collection Programme carried out its part of the Baltic International Trawl Survey (BITS) in the Latvian, Lithuanian and Estonian EEZ.

International animal welfare workshop in Riga

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Latvia informs that  International animal welfare workshop will be held in Riga, Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR” in April 19-20th. Veterinarians from Baltic states, Scandinavia, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova and Bulgaria will participate in this workshop. The aim of the workshop is to provide veterinarians a deeper understanding of animal welfare with focus per species on the animal welfare legislation applicable, the critical welfare issues and species-specific welfare assessment schemes. The workshop will consist of both a theoretical as a practical on-farm session, where participants can bring their theoretical knowledge in practice.

Open tender "Delivery of glass eels"

Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment "BIOR" organizes an open tender  "Delivery of glass eels (Anguilla Anguilla breed of European eels)". Open tender is organized in the frame of project of the European Union Fisheries Fund. It is planned to release 1 030 000 psc. glass eels into lakes and rivers of Latvia.

"BIOR" organizes training course on Laboratory quality management system for Russian colleagues

From 6 to 10 February group of experts from FSFI «Centre for Grain Quality Assurance» (Moscow, Russia) is visiting the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR” to acquire training course on Laboratory quality management system. Under the guidance of “BIOR” experts Russian colleagues acquire principles of European Union (EU) laboratory accreditation system as well as get to know requirements for laboratory accreditation in EU and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Representative from the World Organization for Animal Health (OiE) visits “BIOR”

From 31 January to 3 February the Head of Lyssavirus Unit of Nancy rabies and wildlife laboratory (European Union Reference Laboratory for Rabies/ OIE Reference Laboratory for Rabies) Dr Florence CLIQUET visited the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment „BIOR”.  Purpose of the visit was to evaluate eligibility of the Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory of the institute “BIOR” to be nominated as the OIE Reference Laboratory for Rabies in Eastern Europe.

Prospective veterinarians from Latvian University of Agriculture are doing their field practice at "BIOR"

From 30 January to 9 February last year students of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the Latvian University of Agriculture are doing their field practice in laboratory diagnostics in the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR”. During the practice students have an opportunity to get to know the specifics of the laboratory work and possibly to choose the laboratory as their workplace in future.

"BIOR" organizes staff training for Russian “Federal Centre of Quality and Safety Assurance for Grain and Grain products”

From 30 January to 3 February group of experts from Federal State Institution „Federal Centre of Quality and Safety Assurance for Grain and Grain products” (Moscow, Russia) is visiting the Institute of Food Safety, Animal Health and Environment “BIOR” to acquire training course on determination of quality and safety criteria for animal feed.

Guests learned about the history of the institute, its development priorities and trends, as well as visited the Laboratory of Food and Environmental Investigations. During the week russian colleagues attended workshops and practical training for determination of various feed quality criteria like microelements and macronutrients, dry feed quality parameters, presence of starch and micro-fiber as well as veterinary drugs and pesticide residues.
